Japanese TV ads featuring Western celebrities are nothing new, but thanks to the internet, in recent years they have reached a broader audience than ever. This week we'd like to look back at some of the most memorable ones of the past decade.  Click through the links below for a uniquely Japanese perspective on the celebrities we know and love.

BOSS COFFEE: "ALIEN JONES" (2006)

This series of TV spots for Boss Coffee started back in 2006. An alien investigator (disguised as Tommy Lee Jones) has been sent to Earth to study the ways of its inhabitants.

Alien Jones
Western celebrities are rarely expected to do anything in commercials but play themselves, but for this campaign Tommy Lee actually had to do some acting! The "Alien Jones" campaign was an immediate hit, expanding to a final run of more than 20 spots. Here are a few of our favorites. Click thumbnail to watch the whole series!

HONDA ODYSSEY: GEORGE CLOONEY (2008)

Honda Odyssey

At first glance, sexy bachelor George Clooney may seem an odd choice for a sensible family car like the Honda Odyssey. But the "Odyssey JDM low-rider" model sold in Japan is a bit sportier than its American cousin, and this ad is aimed at the family man who wants just a little more style than your average minivan-driving dad. George Clooney has just the right mix of maturity, manliness, and style to sell it.

SOFTBANK: BRAD PITT (2007)

Softbank

Brad Pitt has been shilling for Japanese mobile phone carrier Softbank for a few years now. Some of the ads he has appeared in are directed by today's hippest film directors, like this one here directed by Wong Kar-Wai.

SOFTBANK: CAMERON DIAZ (2006)

Softbank

Cameron Diaz has been spreading the word about Softbank for even longer than Brad Pitt. She was their first big spokesmodel after they took over cellphone carrier Vodaphone in 2006.
